Hack54 spotlights pioneers shaping healthcare's future with design, data, and community

A New Era of Healthcare Innovation in Ghana
The future of healthcare innovation has taken a bold step forward with the successful conclusion of HealthHack, the first edition of the Hack54 Hackathon Series. This event marked a significant milestone in fostering creativity and problem-solving among young innovators in Ghana.
Organised by thedsgnjunkies, a prominent creative and technology community in Ghana, in collaboration with Socialite AF Ltd, the hackathon was supported by several key partners, including the Alliance for HealthTech Africa, Ashesi Center for Entrepreneurship, Interaction Design Foundation, and CloudPlexo. These collaborations ensured a rich environment for participants to explore innovative solutions to pressing healthcare challenges.
The Theme and Participants
Held under the theme "The Intersection of Design, Data, and Community in Ghana’s Healthcare Future," the four-day event brought together multidisciplinary teams from top tertiary institutions across Ghana. Institutions such as Ashesi University, KNUST, University of Ghana, Legon, and UMaT contributed their brightest minds to this collaborative effort.
Participants engaged in intensive work sessions, developing practical, human-centered, and technology-driven Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). These solutions aimed to address various issues within the healthcare sector, ranging from medication access and patient safety to disease prediction and clinical efficiency.
Judging Panel and Recognitions
The judging panel, composed of leading healthcare professionals, data scientists, and User Experience experts, was deeply impressed by the ingenuity and understanding of Ghana's healthcare landscape demonstrated by the teams. As noted by Klenam Fiadzoe of the Alliance for HealthTech Africa, “These young innovators aren’t just building apps, they’re building the future. They’re successfully combining empathy, data, and design to tackle healthcare challenges that will impact millions of Ghanaians.”
Following a highly competitive pitch session, three standout teams were recognized for their transformative concepts:
Overall Winner (Best UX Solution & People’s Choice Award): NovaHQ
NovaHQ developed a seamless, intuitive platform to enhance patient–clinician engagement while integrating AI-assisted triage features. The judges praised the platform’s exceptional human-centered design, accessibility, and smooth user experience.
Most Impactful Idea: PreaVita
PreaVita focused on data-driven preventive healthcare. Their solution is a machine learning model capable of accurately predicting the number of cholera cases in each region of Ghana based on existing epidemiological and environmental data. This powerful tool demonstrates how predictive analytics can empower public health authorities to proactively prevent outbreaks.
Best Use of Technology: Medi-FI
Medi-FI impressed with its intelligent medication identification platform. The innovation allows users to search for prescribed medicines by simply scanning a picture of the drug, effectively bridging a critical gap in pharmaceutical accessibility, combating counterfeit products, and locating pharmacies with the right supply.
Commitment to Incubation and Growth
The event is only the beginning for the winning teams. The organizers announced a major post-hackathon commitment: the top three teams will be incubated. This will involve providing them with essential mentorship, technical resources, and access to strategic networks to refine their prototypes into scalable, real-world solutions.
The winners will also receive opportunities to pitch their ideas on major innovation platforms, including Tech in Ghana, FiDCon, and other international showcases.
“This is the beginning of something incredible for Ghana and the rest of the continent. Hack54 has proven that when young minds are given the right space and support, they can design transformative solutions for Ghana’s most crucial sectors. Our next step is to help these teams grow their concepts into sustainable businesses,” said Samual Allotey, Co-founder of thedsgnjunkies.
The Future of Digital Innovation in Ghana
Hack54 solidifies Ghana’s position as a burgeoning hub for digital innovation, where ideas born from young talent have the potential to save lives across the continent. Organizers hinted that the next hackathon will be focused on finance and digital assets come February 2026.
