Han Dong-hoon Calls for Public Discussion on Daejang-dong Case

A Call for Public Debate

Former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon has proposed a public debate with several high-profile figures, including Minister of Justice Jung Sung-ho, Judiciary Committee Chairperson Choo Mi-ae, and former Rebuilding Korea Party emergency committee chairperson Cho Kuk. This comes in response to the prosecution's decision to abandon the appeal in the Daejang-dong case.

In a post on his Facebook page, Han stated, “The three of you have already engaged in debates with me regarding the cancellation of the illegal appeal in the Daejang-dong case, so there should be no reason to avoid a public debate.” He added, “I am available anytime, on any broadcast, including Kim Ou-joon, YouTube, broadcast, and it doesn’t matter if it’s not just one person but multiple individuals.”

The individuals targeted by Han are all current or former ministers of justice from the ruling party. This move highlights the growing tensions within the political landscape, particularly around the handling of legal cases and the implications for those involved.

Escalating Tensions

Han recently found himself in a public dispute with these figures over the abandonment of the Daejang-dong appeal. On the 10th, Minister Jung Sung-ho mentioned Han, claiming, “What about yourself? Regarding the disciplinary action against former President Yoon Suk Yeol, you won at the first trial but immediately after taking office as minister, you decided to abandon the appeal to the Supreme Court.”

In response, Han clarified that the abandonment of the appeal regarding former President Yoon occurred after he had resigned as Minister of Justice. He added, “I will file a defamation lawsuit against Minister Jung for spreading false information.”

Criticisms and Counterattacks

Democratic Party of Korea Judiciary Committee Chairperson Choo Mi-ae also targeted Han, stating, “This is a scheme to draw attention through the prosecution’s appeal abandonment fiasco,” adding, “Han Dong-hoon pathetically seems as disoriented as someone who has been shot.” She further claimed, “Han Dong-hoon is someone who abandoned the appeal with the determination to lose.”

In response, Han retorted, “Choo Mi-ae seems to be in a worse state than during the Cho Kuk incident five years ago,” adding, “The lie that Han Dong-hoon abandoned the appeal. While it’s common for Choo Mi-ae to spout nonsense, I will take legal action against her for defamation through the spread of false information.”

Earlier, Han also clashed with former emergency committee chairperson Cho Kuk. The conflict began when Cho posted on Facebook, “I try not to show that I am a law school professor, but I cannot remain silent on this matter,” asserting, “It is clear that the state cannot confiscate or collect fines in the Daejang-dong case.”

In response, Han retorted, “Contrary to your intention, you only come off as ignorant,” adding, “Cho Kuk might not have seen the court ruling or might not have understood it even if he did, but the claim that confiscation is impossible is nonsense, as it is clearly stated in the Daejang-dong group’s ruling.”

Despite Han’s proposal for a public debate, former chairperson Cho stated, “Prosecutor-turned-lawyer Kim Kyu-hyun wants to debate you.” In response, Han said, “Mr. Cho, stop hiding behind some unknown substitute and come out to debate yourself instead of making a pathetic excuse.” Minister Jung and Chairperson Choo did not respond notably to Han’s request for a public debate.
