Hanoi Groom's English Exam: A Love Test Before Wedding

A Unique Wedding Tradition in Hanoi
In a small commune in Hanoi, a 25-year-old man named Nhat Ninh found himself facing an unusual challenge before he could take his bride to their wedding. On the morning of October 16, Ninh arrived at the bride’s house in Tam Hung Commune to ask for her parents’ permission to marry. What followed was a unique twist on a traditional ceremony that left both the couple and onlookers impressed.
The Traditional Setting
The event started off as expected, following the customs of Vietnamese weddings. However, instead of a simple exchange of words or gifts, Ninh was met with a surprise. Before he could proceed, he was handed paper, pens, headphones, and an English quiz. The bride, Quynh Huong, had set up a test that would determine whether she would accompany him to the ceremony.
"I told him I had a challenge for him but kept it secret," said Huong. "The quiz was short so that we would not hold up the ceremony or keep the guests waiting."

The IELTS Quiz Challenge
The test consisted of five IELTS listening questions, which Ninh could only hear once under the supervision of his future wife and six bridesmaids. He listened carefully, took notes, and completed the test in about three minutes. To his relief, he managed to answer four out of the five questions correctly.
After passing the test, Ninh was allowed to greet his in-laws and take Huong to the ceremony. The challenge was not just a fun idea; it was also a way for Huong to showcase her personality and create a memorable moment for the wedding.

A Creative and Memorable Idea
Huong, who is an English teacher, came up with the idea four days before the wedding. She selected questions from a Cambridge IELTS practice book and spent 15 minutes preparing the audio. Her goal was to make the event more meaningful and to give Ninh a chance to demonstrate his language skills.
"The quiz was meant to create a fun memory, not to cause hassles," she explained. "I wanted to make the day special and show that we are a team."
The video of the event quickly went viral on social media, with many people praising the creative approach. Comments flooded in, highlighting how the challenge added a unique touch to the wedding and made it more engaging.
A Love Story Rooted in Education
Ninh and Huong, both from Tam Hung Commune, have a history that dates back to their high school years. They met during an art performance, and their relationship blossomed over time. Huong was drawn to Ninh’s calm and thoughtful nature, while he admired her cheerful and energetic personality.
There is also a deeper story behind the quiz. During their school years, Huong tutored Ninh in English, helping him improve his pronunciation, grammar, and communication skills. This background made the challenge even more meaningful, as it reflected their shared history and mutual support.
A New Tradition?
This unique approach to the wedding ceremony has sparked discussions about the role of education and creativity in cultural traditions. While some may see it as a novelty, others view it as a positive step toward integrating modern values into traditional practices.
As the couple continues their journey together, their story serves as a reminder that love and learning can go hand in hand. Their wedding was not just a celebration of their union, but also a testament to their dedication to growth and personal development.
