Kang Sang-hyun Claims Second Straight World Taekwondo Gold

Kang Sang-hyun Secures Second Consecutive Gold at World Taekwondo Championships
Kang Sang-hyun, a 23-year-old athlete from the Ulsan Metropolitan City Sports Council, has once again proven his dominance in the world of taekwondo by winning his second consecutive gold medal at the World Taekwondo Championships. This achievement highlights his growing reputation as one of the sport's most formidable competitors.
In the men’s +87kg final, held on the 24th at the Taihu International Expo Center in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, Kang faced off against Rafail Aiyukayev, an Individual Neutral Athlete (AIN). The match was a thrilling comeback victory for Kang, who secured a 2-1 (5-7, 8-7, 6-2) win. This success marks Kang's second gold in as many years, following his triumph in the men’s 87kg class at the 2023 Baku World Championships. He made the strategic decision to move up a weight class this time, which ultimately led to his back-to-back titles.
The final was a tightly contested battle. Kang started with some uncertainty, trailing 5-7 in the first round. However, he quickly turned the tide in the second round, building an 8-0 lead before allowing his opponent to catch up to 8-7. In the third and final round, Kang sealed the match with a series of powerful right-body kicks, showcasing his technical skill and mental resilience.
Kim Yu-jin Earns Silver in Women’s 57kg Final

This performance marked a significant milestone for South Korean women’s taekwondo. It is the first time in three years that a South Korean female athlete has won a medal at the World Taekwondo Championships. The last time a South Korean woman claimed a medal was in 2022 when Lee Da-bin earned silver in the 73kg class. Prior to that, the 2023 Baku Championships saw a notable medal drought for South Korean women’s taekwondo.
