Man Attacks 7 at Vietnam Hospital with Knife, Accusing Baby Swap

A Tragic Incident at a Maternity Hospital in Vietnam
A shocking incident unfolded at a maternity hospital in central Vietnam when a man, suspecting that his baby had been switched, attacked several individuals, including newborns and medical staff. The event took place at the Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, where the attacker was later detained for investigation.
The suspect, Ban Van Vy, 29, from Bac Ninh Province, was taken into custody on charges of "murder" under the Penal Code. According to local police, the incident occurred on Thursday and involved multiple victims, including nurses and other hospital visitors.
Vy claimed that while caring for his wife, who had given birth to twins at the hospital, he noticed one of the babies was weak and required intensive care. He felt that the baby was not being properly treated, which led him to suspect that his child had been switched. This suspicion triggered a wave of anger and panic, resulting in an impulsive and uncontrollable act, according to his confession.
Police confirmed that Vy tested negative for drugs and had no prior history of mental illness or treatment. Despite this, his actions during the incident raised serious concerns about his mental state at the time.
At around 10 a.m. on Thursday, Vy entered Room 305 of the hospital’s neonatal department, where his wife and the twins were staying along with several other mothers and newborns. Armed with a fruit knife, he attacked a nurse and a patient's relative. Witnesses reported that Vy attempted to throw two newborns out of a window, but their grandmothers intervened to prevent the tragedy.
When medical staff rushed to the scene, Vy chased and attacked them before a hospital guard and police managed to subdue him after approximately five minutes. The incident resulted in injuries to three nurses and two grandmothers, who are now stable. Two infants sustained minor injuries and are recovering.
Hospital director Tang Xuan Hai stated that Vy’s twins were born prematurely and infected, and they had been transferred to the National Children’s Hospital in Hanoi for further treatment. He emphasized that Vy’s claim that doctors neglected his babies was unfounded, asserting that the medical staff fulfilled all their responsibilities.
Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital is a leading facility in the north-central region, specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics. With over 1,300 medical staff, including many highly trained doctors, the hospital plays a crucial role in providing healthcare services to the community.
This tragic incident has sparked discussions about the importance of clear communication between medical staff and patients, as well as the need for support systems for families dealing with the stress of childbirth and neonatal care. It also highlights the critical need for mental health resources and interventions to prevent such incidents in the future.
