Neighbor Knife Attack Convicted of 6-Year Sentence

A Tragic Confrontation Over Past Grievances

Around 4:20 p.m. on the 10th of last month, in an apartment located in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju City, North Jeolla Province, a seemingly ordinary evening turned into a violent confrontation. A, a 59-year-old man, was drinking alcohol with B, a 53-year-old close acquaintance, in the living room. The atmosphere shifted dramatically when the conversation drifted toward C. B’s casual mention of C upset A, who had previously been fined 500,000 Korean won for drunk misconduct at C’s home in December of last year. This fine stemmed from A’s refusal to vacate C’s property.

Escalation of Tension

Enraged by the mention of C, A shouted, “I got a 500,000 won fine because of C! Don’t mention that bastard. I’m already spending money on dentures because my teeth are rotting. I should just die. Let’s die together!” Without hesitation, A rushed to the sink, grabbed a fruit knife (20 cm) and a kitchen knife (32 cm), and returned to the living room. He then stabbed B’s right thigh with the fruit knife. When B, terrified, asked, “Brother, are you really trying to kill me?” A replied, “You really need to die.”

A proceeded to stab B’s neck and eyebrow area with the kitchen knife. The living room and kitchen quickly became chaotic as the two struggled. B desperately resisted, seized the knife, threw it into the sink, and fled the scene, bleeding profusely.

Escape and Aftermath

Limping, B ran 200 meters to his sister’s side dish shop and asked for help. His sister and brother-in-law were horrified at the sight of B covered in blood. B clearly identified A as the perpetrator to the arriving police and provided the exact unit and floor number of A’s residence.

The police found A’s home in a horrific state. Blood was splattered on the living room cabinet, refrigerator, and sink. Blood-stained footprints from B’s desperate attempt to escape were haphazardly imprinted on the floor.

Transported to the hospital, B regained consciousness the next day in the intensive care unit and was investigated by the police. He stated, “A, intoxicated, suddenly took a fruit knife and kitchen knife from the sink drawer and swung them, saying he would kill me for no reason.”

Denial and Scientific Evidence

However, A denied the crime during the investigation and trial. He claimed, “B tried to stab himself in the neck due to despair, and I only injured my hand while stopping him.” He even absurdly asserted, “After stopping him, I fell asleep from exhaustion and woke up to find B gone.”

Science, however, did not lie. The National Forensic Service’s analysis detected B’s DNA and bloodstains on A’s clothes, both hands, and both feet. Most crucially, the bloodstain patterns at the scene were decisive. “Impact spatter bloodstains,” created when a person is struck while lying down, and “swipe transfer bloodstains,” generated when a bloodied knife is swung, were clear evidence of an attack that could not be explained by self-harm. Even “stationary transfer bloodstains,” which occur when a weapon stops abruptly after hitting a body or surface, were found.

Legal Consequences and Reflections

Although A and B’s statements conflicted, the court acknowledged A’s guilt based on scientific evidence. On the 24th, the Jeonju District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Kim Sang-gon) sentenced A to six years in prison for attempted murder.

The court stated, “According to the National Forensic Service’s report, there is significant evidence suggesting a desperate struggle or intense physical confrontation at the scene. Considering these circumstances, the defendant’s claim that minimal bloodstains remained while stopping the victim’s self-harm is hard to believe.”

A’s criminal history was also scrutinized. In 2021, just four years ago, A had injured someone with a kitchen knife and received a suspended sentence. He committed another violent crime with a weapon immediately after his probation period ended.

The court criticized, “The crime’s nature is extremely heinous, as the defendant attempted to kill a close neighbor out of anger over economic reasons like fines and denture costs. Despite inflicting lifelong suffering on the victim, the defendant shows no remorse.”
