NIGCOMSAT Trains 120 Enugu Youths in VSAT Skills

Empowering Enugu’s Youth Through Satellite Technology
NIGCOMSAT, a key player in Nigeria's telecommunications sector, has taken significant steps to enhance digital connectivity across the country. Recently, the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited trained 120 young people in Enugu State on the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) systems. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve last-mile connectivity and drive Nigeria’s digital transformation.
The training program, which lasted five days, was themed “Strengthening Last-Mile Connectivity: VSAT Capacity Building for Enugu State Communities.” It was organized in collaboration with the Enugu SME Centre and the Office of Digital Economy & MSMEs. The event aimed to equip participants with essential skills that would enable them to contribute to the expansion of satellite-based communication networks in underserved areas.
At the opening ceremony, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director/CEO of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, emphasized the company's commitment to bridging the digital divide in Nigeria. She was represented by Ibiye Ukoko, Head of Sales, who highlighted the importance of this initiative in delivering secure and affordable satellite-based connectivity to rural communities.
“This training reflects our commitment to building a digitally empowered, future-ready Enugu State. By equipping these youths with VSAT skills, we are strengthening the state’s capacity to deploy satellite connectivity across communities where terrestrial infrastructure is weak or non-existent,” said Egerton-Idehen.
She also noted that satellite technology plays a crucial role in expanding broadband access nationwide. According to her, NIGCOMSAT provides high-availability internet to remote areas, offers backhaul services for telecom operators, and supports critical sectors such as banking, education, security, and public institutions.
Egerton-Idehen further pointed out that improved satellite connectivity would bring numerous benefits to Enugu residents. These include enhanced e-governance, increased access to e-learning and telemedicine, and the establishment of resilient communication infrastructure during disruptions.
Representing the Enugu State Government, Mr. Salem Emmanuel, Senior Programmes Manager at the Enugu SME Centre, commended NIGCOMSAT for its investment in the state’s digital development. He spoke on behalf of Hon. Arinze Chilo-Offiah, Special Adviser to the Governor on MSMEs and Digital Economy, and described the initiative as “a strategic step toward empowering the state’s youth with globally competitive digital skills.”
This program not only addresses the immediate need for skilled professionals in the satellite communications sector but also lays the foundation for sustainable digital growth in Enugu. By focusing on youth empowerment, NIGCOMSAT is contributing to a more inclusive and technologically advanced Nigeria.
