OAA Science Lab Renovation Begins in 2001
A Legacy of Excellence: The 2001 Year Group's Science Lecture Hall Renovation
A group photograph featuring the OAA 2001 Year Group marks a significant milestone in the history of Achimota School. This moment is not just about celebration, but about the commitment of the 2001 Year Group of the Old Achimotans Association (OAA 2G1) to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education through a major renovation project.
The project, titled “Celebrating 25 Years of Togetherness – Leaving a Legacy, Fostering Growth in Harmony,” officially kicked off as part of the 25th Anniversary Legacy Project. The initiative aims to modernize one of the school’s most iconic Science learning facilities, the Science Lecture Hall.
Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee, an alumnus of Achimota, delivered a keynote address that highlighted the importance of the project. She commended the 2001 Year Group for their foresight, commitment, and leadership. Dr. Aryee emphasized that the project goes beyond physical improvements, stating:
“This project is about more than concrete and steel. It is about building on the foundation laid by our founders, who taught us to use our head, heart, and hands in service.”
She also praised Achimota as the cradle of leadership and holistic education, noting that every student who walks through its halls is part of a shared purpose: to learn, to serve, and to lead. Dr. Aryee urged alumni to contribute to Achimota’s legacy with integrity, vision, and inclusivity, emphasizing the project’s role in sustaining excellence in STEM education for future generations.
Joel Nettey, President of the Old Achimotans Association, expressed his admiration for the 2001 Year Group for selecting a legacy project that would have a long-term impact. He stated:
“The 2001 Year Group has chosen the refurbishment of the Science Lecture Theatre as their legacy project, a venture that will benefit students in STEM fields and beyond. This renovation ensures future generations acquire the knowledge, skills, and values essential for leadership and service.”
Beauty Olerkie Larbi, Vice President and Co-Chair of the 25th Anniversary Celebration Committee, and Lom Nuku Ahlijah, Co-Chair, provided details about the upgrades. They mentioned that the renovations include modern acoustic ceiling tiles, energy-efficient LED lighting, terrazzo flooring, and renovated washrooms.
“Legacy is about lasting impact,” said Larbi. “We want this to be a project that alumni, years from now, can look back on and say, ‘I’m proud I was part of it.’”
To ensure the successful completion of the project, the committee launched an open fundraising appeal. They invited alumni, partners, and well-wishers to contribute toward completing the project to the highest standards.
The OAA 2G1 extended their gratitude to all participants and encouraged the wider community to support the Legacy Project. Their goal is to ensure that the renovation is completed successfully for future generations of Achimota students.
The project represents more than just a renovation; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of the 2001 Year Group and their dedication to fostering growth and excellence in education. Through this initiative, they are not only preserving the legacy of Achimota School but also investing in the future of STEM education in Ghana.
As the renovations progress, the Science Lecture Hall will become a symbol of the collective effort to provide students with the tools and environment necessary for academic and personal success. The project stands as a reminder that the true value of education lies in its ability to inspire, empower, and uplift future leaders.
