Pearl Tiara from Royal Celebrations Sells for £189,000
A Royal Heirloom with Centuries of History
An exquisite diamond and pearl tiara, crafted for one of Scotland’s most distinguished families, has recently made headlines after being sold at auction for £189,000—far exceeding its pre-sale estimate. This remarkable piece, known as the ‘Airlie Tiara,’ has a rich history that spans over a century of royal events.
The tiara is believed to have been created by Garrard, the Crown Jewellers, in the late 19th century. It features natural saltwater pearls and more than 30 carats of diamonds, making it a stunning example of fine craftsmanship from that era.
Its value was further enhanced by its deep royal connections. The tiara was first worn in 1901 by Mabell Ogilvy, Countess of Airlie, when she was appointed Lady of the Bedchamber by her childhood friend, the Princess of Wales. She continued to wear the tiara on numerous state occasions after the Princess became Queen Mary in 1910.

The tiara was also worn by her granddaughter-in-law, Virginia Ogilvy, Countess of Airlie, who served as Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth II from 1973 until the Queen’s passing in 2022. During this time, the tiara once again became a prominent feature of court life, gracing palace banquets and parliamentary events.
Sarah Duncan, head of jewellery for London auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull, commented on the significance of the piece: “The chance to acquire something with this level of provenance does not come about often, and bidders responded with gusto.”
A Legacy of Elegance and Prestige
The Airlie Tiara is more than just a piece of jewelry; it represents a legacy of elegance and prestige that has been passed down through generations. Its journey through royal history highlights its importance not only as an ornate accessory but also as a symbol of status and tradition.
Over the years, the tiara has been associated with some of the most significant moments in British royal history. From its initial use by the Countess of Airlie to its later appearances during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, the tiara has remained a cherished heirloom.
This auction event has drawn attention from collectors and historians alike, eager to learn more about the history behind this iconic piece. The high price achieved at auction reflects not only the craftsmanship of the tiara but also its deep-rooted connection to royalty.
The Fascination with Royal Jewelry
Royal jewelry has always captured the imagination of the public, and the Airlie Tiara is no exception. Its story is intertwined with the lives of several prominent figures in British history, adding to its allure.
The tiara’s association with Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth II makes it a rare and valuable artifact. It serves as a reminder of the grandeur and tradition that have defined the British monarchy for centuries.
As the tiara continues to make waves in the world of fine art and collectibles, it stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with royal heritage. Whether displayed in a museum or passed down through generations, such pieces carry with them the weight of history and the beauty of craftsmanship.
Other Notable Royal Accessories
While the Airlie Tiara is a standout piece, there are many other royal accessories that have captured public interest. For instance, Queen Elizabeth II’s aquamarine tiara, which Camilla wore for the first time at a Buckingham Palace reception, has also drawn attention for its elegance and historical significance.
Similarly, Kate Middleton’s choice of tiara at various state events has sparked discussions about the evolution of royal fashion and the lasting impact of these iconic pieces.
These stories highlight how royal jewelry is more than just adornment—it is a reflection of history, culture, and tradition. Each piece tells a unique story, connecting the past with the present in a way that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
