PPP Spokesperson Criticizes Disability Funding Allocation
Controversial Remarks by Park Min-young Spark Debate
Park Min-young, a media spokesperson for the People Power Party, has found himself at the center of a heated controversy following remarks that targeted Kim Yea-ji, a re-elected proportional representative from the same party who is visually impaired. Park’s comments have raised concerns about the treatment of individuals with disabilities within political circles.
During an appearance on a YouTube program, Park criticized Kim Yea-ji, questioning why she sought nomination from the People Power Party despite rejecting its policies. He suggested that she viewed her disability as a given rather than embracing her identity as a person with a disability. Park claimed that Kim was violating party policy and expressed frustration over the allocation of proportional representation seats to people with disabilities.
He stated, “The issue is that too many people with disabilities are allocated to proportional representation.” Park went further, describing Kim as part of a privileged class “except for their visual impairment.” He added that she had access to money, education, and a life without significant shortcomings, suggesting that she used her partial vulnerability as a weapon.
Political Factions and Allegations
Park also pointed out that Kim belongs to the pro-Han Dong-hoon faction, claiming that Han Dong-hoon nominated her twice. He mentioned articles about Han entering the party leadership office while being escorted by Kim, implying that she was treated as an accessory for escort purposes. Additionally, Park criticized Kim’s support for the Act on the Appointment of Special Prosecutors, etc., which relates to former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
He argued that the party was suffering because of her actions and called for her to express regret. Park described Kim’s demand for expulsion rather than resignation as “utterly disgraceful,” suggesting that the party had brought in individuals who were not even human and granted them nominations.
Host's Derogatory Comments
During the same program, the female YouTuber who hosted the show made derogatory remarks, stating that Kim Yea-ji should consider herself fortunate to be disabled and that she only achieved her position because of her disability. Park laughed as he listened to these comments, further fueling the controversy.
Apology and Clarification
In response to the backlash, Park explained via social media that the goal was to shed stereotypes of mindlessly vilifying others. He clarified that he did not oppose allocating seats for people with disabilities but emphasized that they should not be overrepresented compared to other groups. Park noted that Kim Yea-ji was elected twice through proportional representation and expressed support for politicians like Choi Bo-yun, who respect party policy and lead the front lines of struggle.
He added, “Nevertheless, I apologize for any expressions that may have sounded overly aggressive.” Park acknowledged that his remarks were unworthy of a party spokesperson and admitted that his language undermined the coherence of the content. He pledged to be more cautious in the future.
Reactions from Other Parties
‘Paper’s TV,’ a YouTuber from the pro-Han Dong-hoon faction, filed a complaint with the Mapo Police Station in Seoul, accusing Park of making derogatory remarks about people with disabilities. Meanwhile, Park Kyung-mi, a spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized the claim that the allocation of proportional representation seats for people with disabilities is excessive. She described it as an anachronistic idea that denies the essence of the legislature, which should represent diverse voices.
Park Kyung-mi added that beyond a lack of understanding of disability rights, this attitude is inhumane and unacceptable for a spokesperson of a major party. She urged the People Power Party to immediately apologize for these reckless remarks and take internal measures to prevent recurrence.
