Profitability of Top 1,000 Domestic Firms Dropped by Half in Two Decades
Decline in Corporate Profitability Over Two Decades
The profitability of major domestic companies has significantly declined over the past 20 years. According to recent data, the total asset operating profit margin of the top 1,000 listed companies by revenue in the country fell from 4.2% in 2004 to 2.2% last year. This metric, calculated by dividing operating profit by total assets, reflects how efficiently a company generates profits from its assets. In 2004, these companies generated 4.2 million Korean won in profit from 100 million Korean won in assets, but this figure dropped to 2.2 million Korean won in the most recent year.

Understanding the Drop in Profitability
The decline in profitability is a cause for concern as it indicates that companies are not generating as much profit relative to their asset base as they did two decades ago. This could be attributed to various factors such as increased competition, higher operational costs, or changes in market dynamics. The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry has highlighted the need for a systemic approach to address this issue and improve corporate performance.

Calls for a New Approach to Corporate Growth
The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry has emphasized the importance of creating a system that rewards companies—regardless of size—that achieve growth and profitability. A representative from the organization stated that if the top 100 small and medium-sized listed companies by total asset operating profit margin were to grow into mid-sized enterprises, they could potentially create 5.4 trillion Korean won in added value. This contribution would account for 0.24% of last year’s domestic GDP, which is significant given the current low-growth environment.
Shifting Corporate Growth Policies
Lee Jong-myung, head of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Industry Innovation Headquarters, stressed the need to shift corporate growth policies. He argued that encouraging companies with increasing profits, rather than protecting those with declining profits, is essential for improving growth rates. Lee suggested that it is time to re-evaluate the current paradigm of corporate growth policies to ensure that companies do not halt their own growth due to restrictive regulations.
Key Recommendations for Improvement
To address the declining profitability and stimulate economic growth, the following steps are recommended:
- Implementing a reward system for companies that demonstrate growth and profitability.
- Encouraging innovation and efficiency across all business sizes.
- Revising regulatory frameworks to support rather than hinder corporate development.
- Focusing on long-term strategies that promote sustainable economic growth.
By adopting these measures, the nation can work towards reversing the trend of declining corporate profitability and fostering a more dynamic and competitive business environment.
