Rosalía's 'LUX' Breaks Spotify Streaming Record in a Day

Rosalía's 'LUX' Breaks Records on Spotify

Rosalía has made history with her latest album, 'LUX', which has become the most-streamed album in a day by a Spanish-speaking female artist on Spotify. The release of this fourth record on Friday marked a significant milestone, as it achieved an impressive 42.1 million streams within the first 24 hours. This number more than doubles the initial success of her 2022 album 'Motomami', which opened with 16 million streams and was recognized as one of Euronews Culture’s Best European Albums of the 21st Century.

Before the release of 'LUX', the record for the most-streamed album in a day by a Spanish-speaking female artist was held by Karol G, whose 2023 album 'Mañana Será Bonito' reached 35.7 million streams on its opening day. Rosalía’s achievement highlights not only her growing influence in the music industry but also her ability to push boundaries and redefine what is possible in contemporary pop.

A New Direction in Sound

'LUX' stands out as one of the most anticipated albums of the year, showcasing Rosalía’s unbridled ambition. Unlike her previous works, which blended traditional flamenco with modern pop and hip-hop elements—seen in her 2017 debut 'Los Ángeles' and 2018’s 'El mal querer'—this album takes a different approach. It moves away from the reggaeton-influenced sounds of 'Motomami' and explores a more avant-garde and operatic style.

The album is structured into four movements and features lyrics sung in up to 13 different languages. Each language corresponds to the life of a different female saint, adding a unique layer of depth and cultural significance to the project. This ambitious undertaking is supported by the London Symphonic Orchestra, as well as collaborations with notable artists such as Björk, Yves Tumor, and even Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Charlotte Gainsbourg, who contributed as composers.

A Unique Listening Experience

While 'LUX' may not be as immediately accessible as some of Rosalía’s previous work, it offers a rich and immersive experience that rewards repeated listens. The album challenges conventional expectations of pop music and invites listeners to embrace risk-taking and innovation. As Euronews Culture noted in their album review:

“A few times in a generation there comes along a sound that so radically goes against the conventions of a genre that it redefines its very boundaries. (...) Rosalía’s fourth studio album is defined by how it sounds completely unlike anything else.”

This statement captures the essence of 'LUX', which is not just an album but a modern masterpiece that pushes the limits of artistic expression. With its innovative approach and experimental soundscapes, it is expected to feature prominently on end-of-year best albums lists.
