SA Citrus Exports Surpass 203 Million Cartons in 2025

Record-Breaking Performance in South Africa's Citrus Export Sector

South Africa’s citrus industry has achieved a historic milestone in the 2025 export season, marking a significant leap in its global presence. The country successfully exported 203.4 million 15kg cartons of citrus fruit to international markets, setting a new record for the highest volume ever recorded. This accomplishment underscores the resilience and strategic planning of the sector, which continues to play a vital role in the nation's economy.

Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen commended the industry for this remarkable achievement, highlighting it as a reflection of the hard work and dedication of growers, workers, and industry leaders. He emphasized that reaching over 203 million cartons for the export market is not just a number, but a clear indicator of the sector’s importance in job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

The 2025 export figures represent a 22% increase compared to the 2024 volumes packed for export. This growth far exceeds initial projections and long-term industry expectations, showcasing the sector’s ability to adapt and thrive despite challenges.

Key Contributions to the Economy

South Africa holds the position of the world’s second-largest citrus exporter, trailing only Spain. Two-thirds of the country’s citrus production is exported as fresh fruit, contributing to 95% of the sector’s annual earnings. This substantial contribution supports job creation across the entire value chain, from farming and packaging to transportation and distribution.

Citrus remains South Africa’s largest agricultural export by value, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of the country’s agricultural sector. The industry has consistently played a critical role in stabilizing the national economy, especially during times of economic uncertainty, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Strategic Collaboration and Future Goals

Minister Steenhuisen expressed his commitment to working closely with the citrus industry to overcome logistical challenges and expand market access. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and industry stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth, job creation, and increased foreign exchange earnings.

The government aims to support the sector in maintaining and strengthening its competitive edge in global markets. This includes investing in infrastructure, improving supply chain efficiency, and exploring new export opportunities to diversify markets and reduce dependency on any single region.

The Importance of Citrus in Global Trade

The success of South Africa’s citrus industry highlights the broader significance of agriculture in the country’s economic landscape. As one of the most valuable agricultural exports, citrus not only contributes to national revenue but also enhances food security and supports rural development.

The industry’s ability to meet international standards and maintain high-quality produce has enabled it to build strong relationships with key trading partners. This reputation for quality is a major asset in securing long-term contracts and expanding market share.

Looking Ahead

With the 2025 season proving to be a turning point for the citrus industry, there is optimism about the future. Continued investment, innovation, and collaboration are expected to drive further growth and solidify South Africa’s position as a leading player in the global citrus market.

As the industry moves forward, it will need to remain agile in response to changing market dynamics, climate conditions, and trade policies. However, with a strong foundation and a proven track record of success, the prospects for South Africa’s citrus sector look promising.
