Siheung Killer Sentenced to Life for Brutal Murders

Background of the Case
Cha Cheol-nam, a man who committed a series of violent crimes in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, was sentenced to life imprisonment. The crimes involved the killing of two ethnic Chinese residents and the stabbing of two South Korean nationals. After the incidents, Cha fled the scene but was later apprehended and brought to justice.
On the 12th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Suwon District Court’s Ansan Branch, presided over by Judge Ahn Hyo-seung, delivered the sentence. Cha was charged with murder and attempted murder. The court emphasized that there is a risk of recidivism, stating that permanent isolation from society is necessary.
The prosecution had initially requested the death penalty for Cha. However, the court acknowledged the difficulty of imposing such a severe punishment while emphasizing that a corresponding level of justice must be served.
Details of the Crimes
Cha is accused of killing two brothers in their 50s, who were ethnic Chinese residents. The incident occurred around 4–5 p.m. on May 17 at Cha's residence in Jeongwang-dong, Siheung City, and at the brothers' nearby home. Two days later, on the 19th at approximately 9:34 a.m., Cha allegedly stabbed B, a woman in her 60s and the owner of a convenience store near his residence, with a weapon before fleeing the scene.
Later that same day, around 1:21 p.m., Cha is suspected of attacking C, a man in his 70s and the owner of his building, with a weapon at a nearby sports park.
Motives and Planning
During police interrogation, Cha revealed that he had lent approximately 30 million Korean won to the brothers multiple times since 2013, but they failed to repay the debt. He also mentioned that he purchased a weapon in advance and planned the crime early this month.
Regarding B, Cha claimed that she spread rumors about him. As for C, he stated that the man ignored him. These were presented as the motives behind the crimes, according to the investigation.
Court's Assessment
The court noted that Cha meticulously planned and prepared for the crimes. He reportedly watched cases on YouTube and TV, devised murder plans, and even practiced swinging blunt weapons in advance. The results of these actions were described as horrifying.
The court further highlighted that two innocent lives were lost due to Cha’s actions, and the two attempted murder victims are still undergoing treatment. They have suffered psychological trauma as a result of the attacks. Despite the severity of the crimes, Cha showed no remorse, boasted about the incidents, and has not been forgiven by the victims’ families. These factors significantly influenced the court’s decision to impose a life sentence.
