Special Prosecutor Issues Warrant for Kim Shin in Navy Scandal

Investigation into Former First Lady Kim Keon-hee Intensifies

The special prosecution team, led by Min Joong-ki, has been intensifying its investigation into various allegations involving former first lady Kim Keon-hee. On the 17th, they summoned Kim Shin, the former head of the Presidential Security Service’s family affairs division, for questioning. This move is part of a broader probe into the so-called “Navy Command Ship Onboard Party” incident.

Kim Shin was questioned from 10 a.m. on the 17th as a reference witness in connection with the allegations. The investigation has already included previous summonses, such as that of Kim Sung-hoon, the former deputy director of the Presidential Security Service, who was questioned on the 11th as a suspect related to the same case.

Allegations Against Former President Yoon Suk-yeol and His Spouse

Earlier this year, Rep. Choo Mi-ae of the Democratic Party of Korea raised serious allegations against former President Yoon Suk-yeol and his spouse. She claimed that they misused military assets by hosting a party on a naval vessel during their summer vacation to Geoje Island, Gyeongsangnam-do, from August 2 to August 8, 2023.

In addition to the party on the naval vessel, Rep. Choo also alleged that the couple rented karaoke machines and used a port command ship, known as the “VIP Lounge,” to set off fireworks at the Geoje Bridge. These claims have fueled further scrutiny from the special prosecution team.

Legal Actions and Charges

In response to these allegations, the special counsel is investigating Ms. Kim and the former deputy director on charges of violating the Presidential Security Act and abuse of authority. The investigation has already led to a seizure and search of the Presidential Security Service in September.

The legal actions continue to expand. A substantive review for the warrant regarding Kim Jin-woo, Ms. Kim’s older brother, is scheduled to take place at the Seoul Central District Court at 10:10 a.m. on the 19th. On the 14th, the special counsel requested a bench warrant for Mr. Kim in connection with allegations of preferential treatment in the development of the Yangpyeong Gongheung District.

Mr. Kim is charged under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes with offenses including national treasury loss, occupational embezzlement, occupational breach of trust, and destruction of evidence. These charges highlight the seriousness of the allegations and the potential legal consequences for those involved.

Ongoing Legal Scrutiny

As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will affect the individuals involved and the broader implications for the political landscape. The special prosecution team’s continued efforts reflect the gravity of the cases being investigated and the public’s demand for transparency and accountability.

With each new development, the focus on former first lady Kim Keon-hee and her associates grows stronger, signaling a complex and high-stakes legal battle that could have lasting effects on South Korean politics.
