Sudan Inflation Falls to 77.40% in October

Sudan's Inflation Rate Shows Continued Decline in October 2025
Sudan’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reported on Wednesday that the inflation rate continued its downward trend, reaching 77.40% in October 2025, compared to 83.47% in September. This marks a significant reduction in the pace of price increases, although the rate remains extremely high.
The annual inflation rate is calculated by comparing the general price level for the current month with the same month in the previous year. This measure reflects the overall change in prices over a full year. According to the CBS, the inflation rate in October 2025 increased by 77.40% compared to the same period in 2024.
Regional Variations in Inflation Rates
In urban areas, the inflation rate dropped to 83.37% in October, down from 87.64% in September. Meanwhile, rural areas saw an inflation rate of 74.76%, a decrease from 81.91% in the previous month. These regional differences highlight the varying economic conditions and access to goods across different parts of the country.
The CBS collects price data from 16 states to calculate inflation. However, due to the deteriorating security situation in North Darfur, data from this region could not be gathered directly. Instead, prices were estimated. Similarly, the bureau continues to estimate data for Central Darfur state, where data collection has been halted since the outbreak of the conflict.
Key Commodities and Consumer Spending Patterns
The CBS uses 663 commodities to track inflation, reflecting the consumption patterns of Sudanese society across various economic, social, and geographical categories. These commodities are divided into 12 groups, with the largest share of household spending going toward the Food, Beverages group, which accounts for 52.89% of income. The Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, Fuel group follows at 14.17%, and the Transport group at 8.34%.
In October, the inflation rate declined in 10 of these groups. The Communications group experienced the highest drop, with a decrease of 16.93%. The Health group also saw a reduction of 13.39%. However, some sectors saw rising prices. The Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, Fuel group recorded an increase of 1.55%, reaching 72.80%. The Restaurants, Hotels group also saw a small rise of 0.69%, with an inflation rate of 47.69%.
State-Level Inflation Trends
The report noted that inflation increased in 8 states during October. Northern State had the highest increase at 13.38%, while South Kordofan saw the smallest rise at 0.65%. In four states, the inflation rate remained stable, while it decreased in six others. River Nile State recorded the largest drop at 70.36%, followed by Al-Gezira State (30.64%) and White Nile State (20.75%). Kassala State saw a 1.43% decrease, North Kordofan State had a 1.22% drop, and Red Sea State experienced a 0.58% decline.
Historical Context and Ongoing Challenges
Although the inflation rate has been gradually decreasing since peaking at 422% in July 2021, many Sudanese citizens continue to face significant challenges. The ongoing conflict has led to the loss of livelihoods, and the local currency continues to depreciate. Additionally, the lack of job opportunities exacerbates the financial strain on households.
Despite the recent decline, the high inflation rate remains a major concern for the population. The CBS’s data provides a critical insight into the economic conditions, but the real impact on everyday life is evident in the struggles of families across the country.
