Trump vows to end Sudan conflict following Saudi appeal

U.S. President Calls for Immediate Action in Sudan Crisis

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong statement urging an immediate halt to the violence and “tremendous atrocities” occurring in Sudan, describing the situation as the “single biggest Humanitarian Crisis.” His comments reflect growing international concern over the escalating conflict that has devastated the country.

In his statement, released through social media, Trump claimed that Arab leaders, including the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, had reached out to him, requesting his influence to intervene in the crisis. He emphasized the importance of working with key Middle Eastern nations to bring stability to Sudan. Specifically, he mentioned Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, along with other regional partners, as countries he would collaborate with to address the ongoing violence.

Trump described Sudan as a “Great Civilization, Culture” that has “gone bad,” but one that can be restored through cooperation among nations, particularly those with significant resources. His message highlighted the urgent need for essential supplies such as food, doctors, and other critical aid for the affected population.

Sudanese Government Welcomes U.S. and Saudi Engagement

The Sudanese government has welcomed the involvement of the United States and Saudi Arabia in efforts to bring peace to the country. This engagement was a central topic during discussions between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House earlier this week. The meeting marked the most significant intervention from Washington since the war broke out in April 2023.

The Sovereignty Council stated that the Government of Sudan “welcomes the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United States of America, for peace in Sudan.” It also affirmed the government’s “serious readiness to engage” with both countries to achieve the peace that the people of Sudan are desperately seeking. The statement expressed gratitude for the attention and continuous efforts of these nations to stop the bloodshed in the country.

However, the Sudanese government has rejected the presence of the United Arab Emirates within the Quad group mediating the crisis. It accuses the UAE of providing military support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and supplying them with mercenaries from various countries to fight the Sudanese Army.

Ongoing Challenges in Mediation Efforts

Despite the efforts of the Quad group to resolve the Sudanese crisis and end the devastating war since mid-April 2023, mediation efforts continue to face significant challenges. The Sudanese Army has refused to accept a humanitarian truce proposed by the Quad mechanism unless specific conditions set by the military leadership are met.

These conditions include the withdrawal of the RSF from the areas they occupy. If these demands are not fulfilled, the military will continue its fight to expel the RSF by force. This stance highlights the deepening divide between the warring parties and the complexity of achieving lasting peace in the region.

International Response and Future Outlook

The international community remains deeply concerned about the escalating conflict in Sudan. As the humanitarian crisis worsens, the need for coordinated global action becomes increasingly urgent. While the involvement of the U.S. and Saudi Arabia represents a positive step, the road to peace remains fraught with obstacles.

The role of regional powers, such as the UAE, continues to be a point of contention. Their alleged support for the RSF raises questions about the impartiality of mediation efforts and the potential for further escalation of the conflict.

As the situation in Sudan evolves, the focus will likely shift toward ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need and that all parties involved commit to a peaceful resolution. The international community must remain vigilant and continue to support efforts aimed at restoring stability and security in the region.
