Vietnamese Outeat Koreans in Noodle Consumption

Global Instant Noodle Consumption Trends

A recent report has revealed that the average Vietnamese person consumed 81 packs of instant noodles last year, placing Vietnam at the top of the list as the world's highest per capita consumer of instant noodles. This statistic highlights the deep-rooted cultural and dietary significance of instant noodles in Vietnamese society.

South Korea came in second, with an average of 79 packs of instant noodles consumed per person, according to a report from the Korea Times, which cited the Osaka-based World Instant Noodles Association. Thailand followed closely in third place, with an average of 57 servings per person. Nepal ranked fourth with 54 servings, while Indonesia and Japan each recorded 52 servings. Malaysia also made the list with 47 servings per person.

Per capita consumption of instant noodles is particularly high in Asian countries that have traditional noodle-eating cultures. These nations often incorporate instant noodles into their daily meals, making them a staple food for many.

Popular Flavors and Preferences in Vietnam

In Vietnam, the most popular flavor of instant noodles is tom chua cay, a mixture of shrimp and acidic flavors. The association noted that Vietnamese consumers prefer noodles with elasticity, which gives the dish a distinct texture. In addition to the standard flour noodles, many products use pho rice noodles, a unique feature of Vietnamese cuisine.

Vietnamese people often enhance their instant noodles by adding onions, lemons, and peppers after cooking. This customization allows for a personalized taste experience, reflecting the country's love for bold and flavorful dishes.

Overall Consumption and Market Leadership

While Vietnam leads in per capita consumption, China remains the largest market in terms of total volume. In 2024, China consumed 43.8 billion servings of instant noodles, accounting for 35.6% of global demand that year. This reflects the vast population and widespread popularity of instant noodles across the country.

Vietnam ranked fourth in overall consumption, with 8.1 billion servings, following Indonesia and India. This places Vietnam among the top consumers of instant noodles globally, despite its relatively smaller population compared to other countries on the list.

The Role of Instant Noodles in Vietnamese Daily Life

Instant noodles hold a special place in Vietnamese culture, where they are a common choice for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Their convenience, affordability, and versatility make them a go-to meal for many households. Whether enjoyed as a quick snack or a full meal, instant noodles continue to be a beloved part of Vietnamese culinary tradition.

The continued popularity of instant noodles in Vietnam is supported by a growing number of local and international brands that cater to the diverse tastes of consumers.
