Watanabe Takes 2nd at Skate America as Liu Claims Victory

Rinka Watanabe Secures Second Place at Skate America
LAKE PLACID, New York - Japan's Rinka Watanabe secured second place at Skate America on Sunday, falling just short of maintaining the narrow lead she had established in the short program over Alysa Liu of the United States. Despite her strong performance in the short program, Watanabe faced challenges during the free skate that prevented her from claiming the top spot.
In the free skate, Watanabe successfully landed her opening triple axel-toe loop combination, showcasing her technical skills. However, she under-rotated three of her subsequent jumps, which affected her overall score. She finished with 136.61 points in the free skate, the third-highest score of the segment, and a total of 210.96 points for the competition.
Alysa Liu, the last season's world champion, also encountered difficulties during the free skate, as she had two under-rotated jumps. Despite this, she managed to secure 140.54 points in the free skate, bringing her total to 214.27 points. This result was enough for Liu to qualify for the Grand Prix Final in December in Nagoya.
Anastasiia Gubanova of Georgia took third place with a total of 204.69 points. The competition featured several strong performances, highlighting the high level of talent in figure skating.
Watanabe Reflects on Her Performance
After the event, the 23-year-old Watanabe expressed satisfaction with her performance, noting that she managed to handle the pressure effectively. "I did rather well to put things together under pressure," she said. "I managed to do the things I can at this moment properly."
Watanabe's performance at Skate America was a continuation of her strong showing earlier in the season. She finished third at the Cup of China last month, the second event of the season. Her qualification for the season finale now depends on the results of other skaters at the sixth and final event next week, the Finlandia Trophy.
"I was able to hold on to a second place, which was huge," she said. "All I can do now is pray to god."
Looking Ahead to the Grand Prix Final
The Grand Prix Final is a prestigious event that brings together the top skaters from the Grand Prix series. For Watanabe, securing a spot in the final would be a significant achievement, especially after her previous success in the series. Her performance at Skate America demonstrated her ability to compete at a high level, even when facing technical challenges.
As the season progresses, Watanabe will continue to work on refining her technique and improving her consistency. Her determination and resilience have been evident throughout the season, and fans are eagerly anticipating her performance at the Finlandia Trophy and beyond.
With the Grand Prix Final on the horizon, Watanabe's focus remains on delivering her best performance and making a strong statement in the final stages of the season. Her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring skaters and highlights the dedication required to excel in the sport.
