All You Need to Know About the New Harley-Davidson X440T

A New Chapter for Harley in the Sub-500 cc Segment
Harley has once again made a bold move in the sub-500 cc market with the introduction of the X440T. This new model channels the spirit of the XR1200, offering a sportier stance that sets it apart from its predecessor, the X440.
The X440T was recently launched in India, and while it had been previewed earlier without any details on specifications or pricing, it is now officially available. One of the most striking features of this bike is how strongly it leans into the XR1200 vibe. The design seems to be a scaled-down version of the XR silhouette, making it more accessible for everyday riders while still maintaining a distinct personality.
Design Elements That Define the X440T
The tail section of the X440T is where the XR influence is most evident. The rear fender is notably large, giving the bike a chunky and robust look that's both functional and stylish. This design choice adds to the overall aesthetic, making the X440T resemble a sport heritage machine adapted for real-world use.
Harley has also redesigned the seat to be more supportive and added oversized grab handles for the passenger. These elements are not only practical but also add a quirky charm that aligns with the XR-inspired attitude. The tank features new X440T branding in a strategic location, along with a side pinstripe that adds a touch of flavor without being overwhelming. New color options such as Pearl Blue, Pearl Red, Vivid Black, and Pearl White contribute to a more modern and appealing palette.

From the front, the X440T looks similar to the X440, but subtle changes in details significantly alter the bike’s energy. Bar end mirrors give the cockpit a cleaner and more custom appearance, while the front fender is now black instead of body-colored. Even the exhaust has undergone a subtle redesign, making the differences noticeable to owners right away.
Performance and Efficiency
Mechanically, the X440T retains the same 440cc air and oil-cooled single-cylinder engine that produces 27 horsepower and 38 pound-feet of torque. While it may not be built for drag racing, it offers sufficient low-end power for city riding and adequate top-end performance for occasional highway trips. The fuel efficiency is impressive at around 35 kilometers per liter, which translates to roughly 82 miles per gallon. Considering the bike's weight of 192 kilograms (about 420 pounds), this efficiency is a standout feature that would appeal to riders who miss the classic thumpers.

Advanced Electronics for Safety and Control
What truly distinguishes the T model is its electronics package. The ride-by-wire system allows for traction control, switchable rear ABS, and two ride modes: Road and Rain. While these features are primarily safety-oriented, they also highlight the target market for the X440T. For its price point in India, having genuine electronic aids is a significant advantage.
The chassis remains the same as the base model, featuring an 18-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear. The wheelbase measures 1,418 millimeters, and the ground clearance is 170 millimeters. The suspension consists of a 43-millimeter KYB upside-down fork with 130 millimeters of travel in the front and gas-charged twin shocks in the rear. Everything is bolted to a trellis frame that provides enough stiffness for spirited riding.

Pricing and Market Positioning
The X440T starts at Rs 279,000 in India, which is approximately $3,100. This price point makes it an attractive option for riders seeking a legitimate small-displacement Harley without the hefty price tag of traditional cruisers. At this cost, you get a tried-and-tested 440cc single, ride-by-wire technology, traction control, switchable rear ABS, ride modes, and the distinctive XR-inspired styling that sets this version apart.
A Potential Global Shift for Harley
The X440T is a surprisingly compelling machine that blends the look of a smaller XR with the friendly nature of a single-cylinder bike. It feels modern without being overloaded with unnecessary technology. This small motorcycle could potentially attract younger riders into the Harley ecosystem without overwhelming them.
If Harley were to make the X440T a global model, especially in the US, it could significantly shift the brand’s trajectory. While purists might dislike it, small bikes are currently experiencing a resurgence. Riders are looking for approachable, fun, and affordable machines. Harley already has one that fits the bill. Now, we can only wait to see if the brand decides to take the X440T beyond India.
