Brigitte Lin's $141M Hong Kong Mansion Plagued by Cockroach Infestation

Brigitte Lin, a revered figure in Taiwanese cinema, recently shared a peculiar and unsettling experience involving a cockroach infestation at her Hong Kong residence. The property, reportedly valued at HK$1.1 billion (US$141 million), became the center of an unusual incident that temporarily disrupted her writing routine.

In an essay published on December 2 in the Chinese magazine Southern Weekly, Lin, who retired from acting in 1994 and later transitioned into writing, recounted how the infestation began with a single cockroach. She described spotting the insect in her study one day and attempting to remove it using a tissue. Unfortunately, her efforts led to an unexpected outcome—she accidentally flicked the cockroach onto her balcony.

"The tissues floated in the air like a scene from a wuxia film," she wrote, as quoted by Dimsum Daily.

A few days after this initial encounter, more cockroaches appeared in her study, prompting Lin to describe the situation as "not a coincidence, but an invasion." She admitted that the presence of the pests left her too unsettled to work, and she found herself constantly scanning the room for signs of insects.

Frustrated by the growing problem, Lin sought advice from a friend and decided to hire a pest-control company. During the first treatment, her housekeeper discovered the kitchen floor covered with what initially appeared to be "tiny black dots." Upon closer inspection, these were identified as dead or dying cockroaches. Lin described the scene bluntly: "Bodies were everywhere."

It took two to three follow-up treatments before the infestation was finally under control. Despite the resolution, the experience left a lasting impression on Lin, who admitted to feeling conflicted about the pests. However, she also issued a warning: "If I see one again, I may not be able to hold back, there will be no mercy."

Now 71, Lin's career began in her teenage years when she was discovered in Taipei. Her breakthrough came with her debut in the film adaptation of Chiung Yao’s Outside the Window. Over the years, she became a leading figure in Chinese-language cinema, earning widespread acclaim and recognition.

Her contributions to the industry were further honored in 2023 when she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 60th Golden Horse Awards. This award highlighted her enduring influence and impact on the world of film.

Lin’s story about the cockroach infestation is a unique and personal account that reflects not only the challenges of daily life but also the resilience and determination that have defined her career. While the incident may seem trivial at first glance, it serves as a reminder of how even the smallest disruptions can have a significant effect on one’s life and work.

For fans and admirers, Lin’s journey continues to inspire, showcasing the strength and perseverance required to thrive in a demanding industry. Whether through her cinematic achievements or her candid reflections on personal experiences, she remains a symbol of grace and endurance.
