Thailand's Transition to Clean Energy: A Major Investment by Egat

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) is making a significant move towards clean energy, with plans to allocate a substantial portion of its budget to support the country’s shift toward sustainable power generation. This initiative includes investments in both clean power generation and electricity transmission projects.

Newly appointed Egat governor Narin Phoawanich has not revealed the exact amount of the budget allocated for these new projects. However, he did mention that some details are available. One of the key projects involves a 50-billion-baht investment to construct three new floating solar farms. These solar farms will be built at the Bhumibol dam in Tak province, as well as the Srinagarind and Vajiralongkorn dams in Kanchanaburi. The combined capacity of these facilities is expected to reach 1,638 megawatts.

In addition to the floating solar farms, Egat plans to build three more pumped hydro-storage power generation facilities. These will be located at the Vajiralongkorn dam, Chulabhorn dam in Khon Kaen, and Kathun dam in Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand. The total combined capacity of these facilities is set at 2,160MW.

The project involves the creation of new reservoirs at higher levels than the existing dams. Water will be pumped uphill for storage and then released to generate electricity during periods of high demand. According to Mr. Narin, these facilities will act as "giant batteries," providing essential backup power when renewable energy sources like solar and wind face intermittent supply due to changing weather patterns.

Egat is also exploring the use of hydrogen fuel at its six gas-fired power plants. The goal is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by replacing 5% of gas usage with hydrogen. This pilot project aims to pave the way for a more sustainable energy future.

Enhancing Transmission Capacity for Economic Growth

Another major focus of Egat’s strategy is increasing electricity transmission capacity in the Eastern Economic Corridor. This region is expected to see significant development, including the growth of modern industries such as resource-hungry data centers that require clean power. Egat aims to raise the transmission capacity from 3.81GW to 5.5GW.

This expansion is part of a broader effort to support economic growth while maintaining environmental sustainability. The government's campaign to reduce carbon dioxide emissions underscores the importance of transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

The Role of Natural Gas in the Transition

Despite the push for renewables, natural gas will remain a crucial fuel during the transition period. Mr. Narin emphasized that before large-scale renewable energy facilities are fully operational, Thailand will continue to rely on fossil fuels for electricity generation.

To facilitate this transition, Egat has formed a joint venture with PTT Plc called PE LNG. This partnership focuses on converting liquefied natural gas into usable gas for Egat’s power plants. This collaboration highlights the strategic approach being taken to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply during the shift to cleaner alternatives.

Egat’s initiatives reflect a comprehensive strategy aimed at balancing the need for reliable power with the imperative to reduce carbon emissions. By investing in both renewable energy and infrastructure upgrades, the authority is positioning Thailand to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
