Experts Push FG to Embrace Tech in Fight Against Terrorism

The Need for Technological Advancement in Nigeria’s Security Strategy
Aviation and security experts are urging the Nigerian government to adopt modern technologies, particularly advanced drones, as a critical component of its strategy to combat terrorism and violent extremism. These experts argue that the current methods used by the country are insufficient against the evolving threats, and that embracing cutting-edge solutions could significantly enhance national security.
The growing strength of these security challenges has raised alarms among professionals in the field. Despite the government's efforts, many believe that the response remains inadequate. Femi Adeniji, a Nigerian aviation expert based in the United States, highlighted the need for Nigeria to move away from outdated, manpower-heavy approaches. He emphasized that Western nations have successfully reduced terrorism by leveraging advanced technologies, and Nigeria should follow suit.
Adeniji, who is also the CEO of Nigame Aircraft Consult in the U.S., pointed out that while citizens play an important role in supporting national security, over-reliance on human intelligence has proven ineffective in environments plagued by corruption and mistrust. He stressed that modern technology offers more efficient and reliable alternatives.
One such example is the Resolute Eagle, a military-grade unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that has been deployed in various countries to combat criminal activities. Adeniji explained that this drone can be operated from anywhere, allowing operators to remain safe from conflict zones. It can carry ITAR-approved arms, fly silently and invisibly, and record live events. These features make it an ideal tool for counter-terrorism operations.
According to Adeniji, the Resolute Eagle can fly at an altitude of 21,000 feet and has a flight endurance of up to eight hours. Its ability to be rapidly deployed to any conflict zone enables security forces to gain the element of surprise—a crucial factor in counter-terrorism efforts.
He noted that Western nations have effectively reduced terror attacks by combining advanced technology with intelligence and swift military action. For example, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, these technologies helped minimize casualties while targeting terrorists efficiently. Although he acknowledged the Nigerian government’s efforts, including recent changes in military leadership, he insisted that technology-driven solutions are essential for long-term success.
Enhancing Surveillance and Intelligence Gathering
Security analyst Mohammed Lawal echoed similar concerns, pointing out that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy has been hindered by delayed responses and poor intelligence gathering. He believes that drones could significantly improve these areas.
Lawal argued that drones would enable 24-hour surveillance without putting soldiers’ lives at risk. If high-end drones were deployed in conflict hotspots across the North-East, North-West, and parts of the North-Central regions, terrorists would lose their element of surprise. This would provide security forces with better situational awareness and allow for quicker, more effective responses.
Key Benefits of Drone Technology
- Remote Operation: Drones can be controlled from a safe distance, reducing the risk to personnel.
- Advanced Capabilities: Modern drones are equipped with features like silent flight, high-altitude operation, and real-time data recording.
- Rapid Deployment: They can be quickly sent to conflict zones for surveillance and intervention.
- 24/7 Surveillance: Drones can monitor areas continuously, providing uninterrupted intelligence.
- Reduced Risk to Soldiers: By minimizing direct exposure to danger, drones help protect military personnel.
Conclusion
As the threat of terrorism and violent extremism continues to evolve, the need for innovative and effective security measures becomes increasingly urgent. Experts like Femi Adeniji and Mohammed Lawal highlight the importance of integrating advanced technologies such as drones into Nigeria’s security framework. These tools offer a strategic advantage that traditional methods cannot match. By adopting modern solutions, the Nigerian government can not only enhance its counter-terrorism efforts but also safeguard the lives of its citizens and security forces.
