First African Science Conference Unveiled

The World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) 2025 Begins in Tshwane

TSHWANE, South Africa — The World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) 2025 kicked off on Monday in Tshwane, marking the first time this global event is being held on African soil. The conference brings together science communicators from around the world to discuss the critical role of science journalism in shaping public understanding and fostering social justice.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Science journalism and social justice: journalism that builds understanding and resilience.” This focus highlights the importance of science communication in addressing societal challenges and promoting equitable development. South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) emphasized that hosting the event reflects the country’s dedication to strengthening science diplomacy and amplifying the visibility of African innovation.

“Science holds immense promise for humanity and for building a just and humane world,” said François Davel, director of international cooperation at DSTI. “We must harness science in service of society — particularly for the most vulnerable and marginalized.”

Field Trips and Science Storytelling

Delegates began the conference with field trips to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its significant hominid fossil discoveries. Organizers chose this location to emphasize the power of science storytelling in enhancing public engagement with scientific concepts.

“In this cradle of human history, science and interpretation come alive through evidence-based storytelling,” said Lynne Smit, senior editor at Nature Africa and a member of the local organizing committee. “This site serves as a reminder of how science can connect us to our past and guide our future.”

Equipping Journalists for Impactful Communication

Conference Director Engela Duvenage highlighted that the WCSJ aims to provide journalists with the tools needed to communicate science in an accessible, ethical, and impactful manner. The goal is to foster community resilience by ensuring that scientific information reaches diverse audiences effectively.

The conference also follows closely on the heels of South Africa’s annual Science Forum, which took place just two days prior. This back-to-back series of events underscores the country’s growing role as a hub for science communication and innovation.

Key Discussions and Global Collaboration

Throughout the conference, delegates are expected to engage in discussions on various topics, including the ethical responsibilities of science journalists, the role of media in combating misinformation, and strategies for making complex scientific research more accessible to the general public.

One of the key objectives of the WCSJ is to encourage collaboration among science communicators from different regions. By sharing best practices and experiences, participants aim to build a more inclusive and effective global science communication network.

The Role of Science in Social Justice

The theme of social justice resonates strongly within the context of science journalism. As climate change, public health crises, and technological advancements continue to shape the world, the need for accurate and responsible reporting has never been more critical.

Journalists are tasked with not only conveying scientific facts but also highlighting the human stories behind them. This includes addressing issues such as inequality, access to healthcare, and the environmental impact of industrial activities.

Looking Ahead

As the conference progresses, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, panel discussions, and networking sessions designed to enhance their skills and broaden their perspectives. These interactions are expected to foster long-term collaborations and inspire innovative approaches to science communication.

The WCSJ 2025 is more than just a gathering of professionals; it is a platform for dialogue, learning, and action. By bringing together voices from across the globe, the conference seeks to create a more informed and engaged public, capable of navigating the complexities of the modern world.
