Gwangju's Top Math Genius Revealed as YouTube Pro

The sole perfect scorer on the 2026 academic year college entrance exam in Gwangju Metropolitan City has become a topic of interest after it was revealed that the individual had previously demonstrated remarkable math skills on a YouTube channel. This revelation has sparked curiosity about the student's background and approach to education.

According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, Choi Jang-woo, a third-year humanities student at Gwangju Seoseok High School, achieved a perfect score on this year’s exam. Among the five perfect scorers, one is a current student from Gwangju, two from Seoul, and one from Jeollabuk-do, while the remaining individual is a retaker from Seoul.

Choi has applied to the Department of Economics at Seoul National University through the non-regular admissions general track and is currently waiting for the final result. His journey to success has not gone unnoticed, especially due to his previous appearance on a YouTube channel where he showcased his mathematical prowess.

In January of this year, Choi participated in a street math challenge hosted by YouTuber ‘MimiMinu,’ which targeted students in the Gwangju area. At the time, he introduced himself as “ranking first in the school with a 1.00 GPA, serving as the 50th student council president and the 14th chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan High School Student Council.”

During the challenge, Choi was presented with a Mathematics II problem. When asked if any topic was fine, he confidently responded and solved a differential function problem in under 10 seconds. His quick thinking and accuracy stunned the audience as he provided the correct solution to the second question with ease.

When asked about the secret to his perfect score, Choi shared his approach: “I did not separate school grades from college entrance exam studies. Instead, I focused on identifying and filling gaps in my school education.” He emphasized that his diverse experiences, including his roles as student council president and chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan High School Student Council, were also greatly beneficial.

Choi's story highlights the importance of a well-rounded education and the value of extracurricular activities in shaping a successful academic path. His achievements have inspired many students and educators alike, proving that dedication, hard work, and a balanced approach to learning can lead to extraordinary results.

His journey serves as a reminder that success is not solely determined by academic performance but also by the ability to manage responsibilities, develop leadership skills, and maintain a strong focus on personal growth. As he awaits the outcome of his university application, Choi continues to be a role model for students striving to achieve their goals.
