Meta buys Limitless, targets superintelligence wearables

Meta Acquires Limitless, a Pioneer in AI Wearable Technology

Meta, the company behind Facebook, has made a significant move in the field of artificial general intelligence by acquiring Limitless, a startup that specializes in developing AI-powered wearable devices. The acquisition highlights Meta's growing interest in creating advanced AI tools that can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life.

Limitless is known for producing pendant-shaped AI devices that are capable of recording and summarizing conversations. These devices represent a unique approach to how people interact with artificial intelligence, offering a hands-free and discreet method of capturing and processing information.

Dan Siroker, the CEO of Limitless, shared the news of the acquisition through a video posted on the company’s website. In the video, he expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are pleased to share the news that Limitless has been acquired by Meta.” Siroker added, “Meta recently announced a new vision to provide personal superintelligence to everyone,” emphasizing that the core of this vision lies in creating remarkable AI-based wearables. He continued, “We share this vision and are joining Meta to turn it into reality.”

The concept of superintelligence refers to AI systems that are significantly more intelligent than humans, surpassing what is known as artificial general intelligence (AGI), which represents human-level AI. This is a major step forward in the development of AI technology, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been actively pushing for advancements in this area. Recently, Meta established the Meta Superintelligence Lab (MSL) in June and has been recruiting AI talent from competitors like Apple. The acquisition of Limitless is seen as a strategic move in this direction, raising questions about the future of wearable devices equipped with superintelligence AI.

Changes in Product Strategy

Following the acquisition, Limitless has announced plans to discontinue the sale of new products. However, the company will continue to support existing customers for at least one year. Additionally, they have decided to waive the monthly subscription fee, which was previously up to 49 U.S. dollars. This decision reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for its current users.

Siroker also mentioned that services other than the pendant will be phased out, and there may be changes regarding regional availability. This suggests that Limitless is focusing its efforts on refining and expanding its core product, while gradually shifting away from other offerings.

Implications for the Future of AI

This acquisition signals a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly looking to integrate AI into everyday objects and experiences. With Meta's resources and expertise, Limitless's technology could potentially evolve into a powerful tool for personal productivity, communication, and even health monitoring.

As the field of AI continues to advance, the role of wearable technology is expected to grow. Devices like those developed by Limitless could become essential tools for individuals seeking to enhance their daily lives through smart, intuitive, and personalized AI assistance.

The collaboration between Meta and Limitless is just the beginning of what could be a transformative journey in the world of AI. It remains to be seen how these innovations will shape the future of technology and its impact on society.
