Museveni Calls on Graduates to Embrace Healthy Living and Family Prosperity

President Museveni's Message to Graduates

President Yoweri Museveni has delivered a powerful message to fresh graduates, encouraging them to embrace healthy lifestyles, avoid alcohol consumption, and concentrate on creating wealth for their families. This call to action was conveyed through Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa during the 32nd graduation ceremony of Kampala International University (KIU) in Ishaka, where 2,385 students received degrees across multiple academic programs, including Bachelor's, Diploma, Master's, and PhDs.

Museveni emphasized that for graduates to be truly patriotic and support their families and country, they must lead disciplined lives. "If you want to be patriotic and your family and country depend on you, you cannot be promiscuous; you cannot drink alcohol," he stated. His words underscored the importance of personal responsibility and moral integrity as foundational elements for success.

In addition to advocating for healthy living, the president encouraged graduates to support their parents and guardians in building family wealth. He also highlighted the significance of nurturing spirituality, suggesting that reading religious texts such as the Bible or Quran could provide guidance and strength.

The Role of Character in Success

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa reinforced the importance of character during his address. He reminded the graduates that success is not solely determined by academic qualifications. "Do not think you will succeed simply because you have a degree. You will succeed because of your character, your effort, your big dreams, and your determination—not just connections," he said.

This message resonated with the audience, emphasizing that while education is crucial, it is the values and perseverance of individuals that ultimately shape their achievements. Tayebwa’s speech served as a reminder that success requires more than just knowledge—it demands hard work, resilience, and a clear vision.

Calls for Institutional Support

During the ceremony, Hassan Basajjabalaba, chairman of KIU’s Board of Trustees, made several recommendations to the government. He urged authorities to grant tax exemptions on essential items such as laboratory materials for private universities, review the student loan scheme, and increase funding for research initiatives. These proposals aimed to enhance the quality of education and foster innovation within the academic sector.

The graduation event marked a significant milestone for KIU, as 2,385 students from various disciplines celebrated their academic accomplishments. This achievement reflects the university's commitment to providing quality education and producing skilled professionals who can contribute to Uganda's development.

A Celebration of Achievement

The ceremony was a vibrant celebration of academic excellence, with graduates donning caps and gowns, and families and friends gathering to witness this important milestone. It was a moment filled with pride, hope, and aspirations for the future.

As the graduates step into the next phase of their lives, they carry with them not only their degrees but also the wisdom and guidance imparted by leaders like Museveni and Tayebwa. Their journey ahead will be shaped by the lessons learned, the values instilled, and the support of their communities.
