QR Code Payments for Chinese Tourists in Vietnam Starting December 2

Expansion of Mobile Payment Services Between China and Vietnam

Starting from December 2, Chinese visitors to Vietnam will have the opportunity to use their familiar mobile payment applications to scan VIETQR Global codes. This new feature allows for direct payments at various locations across the country, including shopping centers, restaurants, and tourist spots. The initiative aims to provide a more efficient, secure, and user-friendly payment experience for travelers, while also supporting Vietnamese businesses in tapping into one of their most significant markets.

This development is the result of over a year of technical collaboration between UnionPay International (UPI) of China and the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS). The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by high-ranking officials from both countries in October 2024. The agreement highlights the growing importance of cross-border financial cooperation between the two nations.

Under the current plan, by early 2026, the system will be expanded to allow reverse transactions. This means that Vietnamese travelers will be able to use mobile payment apps from NAPAS member banks to scan QR codes and make payments in China. Once fully implemented in both directions, this system will create a comprehensive cross-border QR payment ecosystem. This ecosystem will support tourism, trade, and consumer spending between China and Vietnam, strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

Larry Wang, Vice President and CEO of UnionPay International (UPI), emphasized that Vietnam is a crucial market for China in terms of both trade and tourism. He noted that UPI has already established an extensive payment network in Vietnam. Enhancing the convenience of cross-border payments, according to Wang, will further promote economic exchanges, trade activities, and interactions between people of the two nations.

According to data from the General Statistics Office, China has been the leading source of foreign tourists to Vietnam this year, with 4.3 million arrivals recorded so far. This underscores the significance of the new mobile payment initiative in facilitating smoother transactions for Chinese visitors and contributing to the growth of Vietnam's tourism sector.

The integration of mobile payment systems between China and Vietnam represents a major step forward in digital financial cooperation. It not only simplifies the process of making payments for travelers but also supports the broader goal of fostering stronger economic and cultural ties between the two neighboring countries. As the cross-border QR payment ecosystem continues to develop, it is expected to play a vital role in enhancing the overall travel experience and promoting mutual economic growth.
