South Korea's ICT Exports Reach New Peak

Record-Breaking ICT Exports Highlight Global Demand Recovery
Last month, the information and communication technology (ICT) industry witnessed a significant milestone as its export value reached a record high. According to recent announcements from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, November exports totaled $25.45 billion, marking a 24.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Imports also saw growth, reaching $12.77 billion, an increase of 2.7%. This surge in exports led to a trade surplus of $12.69 billion, which is the highest recorded in history.
This achievement marks the tenth consecutive month of record-high ICT exports, driven by the global recovery in demand for ICT devices. The consistent rise in demand has been a key factor behind the impressive figures, with various sectors contributing significantly to this growth.
Key Sectors Driving Export Growth
Several key sectors within the ICT industry showed substantial increases in their export performance. Semiconductors, for instance, experienced a remarkable 38.6% growth in exports. This was largely attributed to the sustained rise in memory semiconductor prices and strong demand for high-value-added products. The demand for advanced components such as camera modules and 3D sensing modules has also contributed to the growth in mobile phone exports, which saw a 3.5% increase.
Other notable contributors to the export growth include computers and peripherals, which rose by 1.9%, and telecommunications equipment, which increased by 3.3%. However, there were some areas where exports declined. Displays, for example, saw a decrease of 3.7%, indicating a shift in market dynamics or reduced demand for certain product types.
Regional Performance Highlights
The growth in ICT exports was not uniform across all regions. While India experienced an 8.9% decline in exports, several other markets showed robust growth. Exports to China, including Hong Kong, increased by 25.3%, reflecting the continued importance of the Chinese market for ICT products. Vietnam saw an 11.6% rise in exports, while the European Union recorded an 18.1% increase. The United States also showed positive growth, with a 7.9% increase in exports.
Taiwan experienced a significant 32.2% growth in exports, highlighting the region's role as a key player in the global ICT supply chain. Additionally, Japan saw an 18% increase in exports, driven primarily by higher shipments of semiconductors and computers and peripherals.
Implications of the Export Surge
The surge in ICT exports underscores the resilience and adaptability of the industry in the face of global economic fluctuations. The consistent growth over the past ten months indicates that the sector is well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities. As demand for advanced technologies continues to rise, the ICT industry is likely to remain a key driver of economic growth in the coming months.
With the current momentum, it is expected that the industry will maintain its upward trajectory, supported by ongoing investments in research and development, as well as strategic partnerships with international markets. The positive trends observed in both exports and trade balances are clear indicators of the sector's strength and its potential to contribute further to national and global economic stability.
