UM6P Launches CoreLabs, Africa's Innovation Hub in Benguerir

A New Era of Scientific Innovation in Africa

The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) has launched a groundbreaking initiative with the inauguration of its new UM6P CoreLabs in Benguerir. This multidisciplinary scientific platform is designed to revolutionize research, innovation, and advanced training across Africa. The university highlights that this development marks a significant step toward strengthening scientific sovereignty, fostering local value creation, and integrating Africa into global knowledge networks.

Addressing Structural Challenges

For many years, African researchers have faced significant structural barriers, including reliance on foreign laboratories, limited access to advanced tools, long delays in experiments, and a lack of control over their data. In response to these challenges, CoreLabs aims to provide an integrated environment where observation, experimentation, analysis, and validation can be conducted locally, adhering to international standards.

Three Pillars of Innovation

The new infrastructure is built around three high-level platforms: Imaging & Characterization, Biosciences, and Analytical Chemistry. Each platform is equipped with cutting-edge technology to support various fields of research and innovation.

Imaging & Characterization CoreLab

This CoreLab houses some of the rarest instruments in Africa, including a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and a Focused Ion Beam (FIB). These tools enable nanometric-scale analysis of materials, opening up new possibilities in advanced materials, clean energy, precision agriculture, and health research.

Biosciences CoreLab

The Biosciences CoreLab provides researchers with high-throughput genome sequencing technologies and 3D cellular imaging capabilities. These tools allow for the decoding of complex biological systems, from individual cells to entire genomes. According to UM6P, this platform supports innovations in precision medicine, food security, and genomics, while reinforcing Africa’s scientific sovereignty and control over sensitive biological data.

Analytical Chemistry CoreLab

The Analytical Chemistry CoreLab offers state-of-the-art systems for detecting and analyzing pollutants, trace metals, and emerging substances in water, air, soil, and food. The goal is to transform complex datasets into actionable insights for researchers, industries, and policymakers working on natural-resource management and sustainable development.

A Continental Reference Hub

UM6P envisions CoreLabs as a continental reference hub that will foster partnerships with African universities, research centers, and industrial actors. This collaborative approach aims to support the transformation of scientific output into practical solutions aligned with regional priorities. By providing a centralized platform for research and innovation, CoreLabs is poised to become a catalyst for scientific advancement across the continent.

Conclusion

With its focus on overcoming existing challenges and promoting local scientific development, the UM6P CoreLabs represent a major milestone in Africa's journey toward self-sufficiency in research and innovation. The integration of advanced technologies and a commitment to collaboration make this initiative a beacon of hope for the future of science in Africa.
