US Embassy and Ethiopian Academy Host University Workshop
Strengthening Higher Education Through Collaboration
Addis Ababa, December 11, 2025: A significant event took place in the capital city as the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) and with support from the U.S. Department of State's Fulbright Specialist Program, organized a three-day workshop titled "Endowment Fund Management and Alumni Engagement." The event was held from December 3 to 5, 2025, at the Hilton Hotel. It brought together leaders from Ethiopia’s ten first-generation research universities to discuss practical strategies for building sustainable alumni giving programs and endowment funds—essential components for the growth and development of higher education institutions in Ethiopia.
The workshop was led by Fulbright Specialists Dr. Ty Ropp, Vice President of Development at the Oklahoma State University Foundation, and Dr. Walter McCollum, President and Chair of the Fulbright Association. They facilitated sessions that explored the relationship between endowment development and alumni relations, aiming to foster sustainable growth for universities.
Participants were provided with expert guidance on various aspects such as alumni communication strategies, donor stewardship and recognition, alumni giving programs, university fundraising, and endowment management. The event included interactive fireside chats, design thinking exercises aimed at developing tailored alumni giving programs, and discussions on endowment policy frameworks for Ethiopian universities.
Jonathan Koehler, Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S. Embassy, and EAS President Professor Belay Kassa delivered opening remarks highlighting the importance of alumni engagement in advancing the public interest in Ethiopia's higher education institutions. Koehler emphasized, “This collaboration demonstrates our shared commitment to advancing Ethiopia's higher education sector and building on seven decades of U.S.-Ethiopian partnership in higher education.”
Over the course of three days, attendees engaged in networking activities, shared case studies on endowment policy development, and applied design thinking in breakout sessions to create actionable alumni programs for their respective institutions.
The "Endowment Fund Management and Alumni Engagement" workshop is part of a three-year U.S. initiative designed to support the Ethiopian Ministry of Education's efforts to transition public universities to autonomous governance. By promoting U.S. excellence in higher education, the U.S. Embassy and its partners are contributing to the development of a self-sufficient and resilient higher education sector in Ethiopia. These initiatives are vital in enhancing Ethiopia's institutional and research capacity, improving commercial competitiveness, and supporting the development of a skilled workforce—key steps in helping Ethiopia become a stronger economic and trading partner for the United States.
Key Outcomes and Future Implications
The workshop not only provided valuable insights but also created a platform for meaningful dialogue among stakeholders in Ethiopia's higher education landscape. Participants left with a clearer understanding of how to build effective alumni engagement strategies and manage endowment funds to ensure long-term sustainability for their institutions.
Some of the key outcomes from the event include:
- A comprehensive framework for alumni engagement that can be adapted by different universities across Ethiopia.
- Practical tools and techniques for donor stewardship and recognition, which can significantly enhance fundraising efforts.
- A network of professionals who are committed to fostering collaboration and sharing best practices in endowment fund management.
The success of this workshop underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing the challenges faced by higher education institutions. By leveraging the expertise of U.S. specialists and local leaders, the event has laid the groundwork for future collaborations that can further strengthen Ethiopia's higher education system.
Looking ahead, the U.S. Embassy and its partners plan to continue supporting initiatives that promote autonomy, innovation, and excellence in Ethiopian universities. This includes organizing more workshops, providing training programs, and facilitating exchanges that can help Ethiopian institutions learn from global best practices.
Through these efforts, the U.S. Embassy aims to contribute to the broader goal of creating a robust and sustainable higher education sector in Ethiopia. This will not only benefit the students and faculty within the country but also position Ethiopia as a key player in the global academic and research community. The ongoing collaboration between the U.S. and Ethiopia is a testament to the shared vision of fostering educational excellence and mutual growth.
