LG Innotek advances robotics and autonomous tech

LG Innotek's Strategic Shift Toward High-Value Solutions
At the CES 2026 exhibition in Las Vegas, U.S., LG Innotek President Moon Hyuk-soo made a significant statement during a press briefing on the 7th (local time). He declared, “LG Innotek is no longer a component company but a solution company.” This marked a pivotal moment for the company as it moves toward restructuring its business to focus on high-profit, high-value-added sectors. The shift reflects a broader strategy to address complex challenges that individual components alone could not resolve.
Comprehensive Solutions for Modern Challenges
President Moon highlighted several key solutions that LG Innotek is emphasizing. These include integrated approaches to tackle issues that were previously difficult to manage with standalone components. A prime example is the company’s ‘Autonomous Driving Composite Sensing Solution,’ which combines vehicle camera modules, LiDAR, radar, and software into a cohesive system. This comprehensive approach not only enhances performance but also offers a more reliable and scalable solution for the automotive industry.
Diversification of Business Areas
LG Innotek’s operations are structured around three main areas: sensors, substrates, and control systems. President Moon noted that these growth engines were initially developed for home appliances and smartphones. However, the company is now expanding its offerings to include automobiles, humanoid robots, drones, and satellites. This diversification is aimed at tapping into new markets and ensuring long-term growth.
Future Industries and Robotics Development
President Moon also discussed future industries, particularly robotics. He mentioned that the robotics sensing component business has already begun mass production, with sales reaching tens of billions of units. Collaborations with companies like Boston Dynamics in the U.S. have led to the development of a ‘vision sensing system’ for robots. President Moon emphasized that the company will continue to explore and review commercialization opportunities in areas such as robot sensing, actuators/motors, and tactile sensors.
Semiconductor Substrate Utilization
With the increasing demand for high-performance, high-density mobile semiconductor substrates driven by the spread of 5G communication and the trend toward high-performance smartphones, President Moon stated, “We expect semiconductor substrate utilization rates to reach 100% operation.” To meet this demand, the company is actively reviewing various ways to expand production capacity.
Advancements in Glass Substrates
President Moon revealed that LG Innotek is accelerating the development of glass substrates, a next-generation semiconductor substrate technology. Unlike traditional plastic-based substrates, glass substrates offer stability in heat and electrical properties while allowing precise placement of more chips due to their rigidity. This innovation is expected to enhance the performance and reliability of semiconductor devices.
Currently, LG Innotek is collaborating with global big tech companies to develop glass substrate prototypes. This partnership underscores the company’s commitment to leading the next wave of semiconductor technology and maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving market.
