LG's K-EXAONE: 7th Globally, 1st at Home

Introduction to K-EXAONE: A Breakthrough in AI Development

LG AI Research has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) model named ‘K-EXAONE (EXAONE)’. The research team highlighted that the model showcased exceptional performance across multiple benchmark evaluations, outperforming well-known models from the United States and China. This achievement places K-EXAONE as the leading domestic model and among the top global AI models.

Development of K-EXAONE

K-EXAONE was created by leveraging the technological expertise LG AI Research has developed over the past five years in building AI foundation models. Unlike other approaches that focus primarily on increasing data volume, the team concentrated on improving the model’s architecture to enhance performance while simultaneously reducing learning and operational costs. This strategy resulted in a high-efficiency, low-cost structure.

Advanced Technology Integration

The research team applied an advanced version of its core technology, known as 'hybrid attention', which was validated in EXAONE 4.0. Attention mechanisms are crucial for AI models as they allow the system to determine which information to prioritize when processing large datasets, similar to how the human brain functions.

By refining hybrid attention—which combines the ability to focus on specific data ranges (like viewing individual trees) and understand broader contexts (like seeing the entire forest)—the team managed to reduce memory and computational requirements by 70% compared to EXAONE 4.0.

Efficiency and Cost Reduction

A source from LG AI Research explained, “K-EXAONE’s design prioritizes efficiency and cost reduction, enabling operation on A100-class GPU infrastructure rather than high-end systems. This allows companies with limited resources to adopt and utilize frontier-level AI models, expanding the domestic AI ecosystem.”

Government-Led Initiative

K-EXAONE is part of the government-led ‘Independent AI Foundation Model Project’. In the first evaluation phase, it ranked first in 10 out of 13 benchmark tests, achieving an average score of 72 points—the highest among five teams.

In the ‘Intelligence Index’ evaluation by global AI performance assessor Artificial Analysis, K-EXAONE scored 32 points, ranking 7th globally and 1st domestically among open-weight models. Currently, six Chinese and three U.S. models occupy the global top 10. K-EXAONE was also listed as a ‘Notable AI Model’ by the U.S. nonprofit AI research organization Epoch AI.

Free Access to K-EXAONE API

LG AI Research will provide free access to the K-EXAONE API (Application Programming Interface) until January 28. Anyone interested in AI can use the platform-as-a-service (PaaS) to develop and deploy their own AI agents without requiring high-end infrastructure or advanced coding skills. This initiative aims to democratize access to cutting-edge AI technology and foster innovation within the AI community.
