Strict visa rules hinder Vietnamese travel abroad: Agoda

Survey Reveals Impact of Visa Restrictions on Vietnamese Travel Plans

A recent survey conducted by the online travel platform Agoda has highlighted the significant influence of visa restrictions on the travel behavior of Vietnamese citizens. According to the findings, 60% of Vietnamese respondents indicated that these restrictions have a direct impact on their travel plans. The survey involved 3,353 participants across nine Asian markets, including Vietnam.

The results showed that 91% of respondents expressed a desire to travel abroad more frequently if visa procedures were simplified and access to new countries was improved. This suggests a strong demand among Vietnamese travelers for more flexible and accessible international travel options.

Shift in Travel Priorities

One of the most notable findings from the survey is the change in travel priorities among Vietnamese citizens. Due to restrictive visa rules, 50% of respondents said they would now prioritize domestic travel over international trips, a significant increase from 26% reported last year. This shift indicates a growing frustration with the current visa system and its limitations on international mobility.

Vietnam's passport has also seen a decline in global ranking, slipping four places to 92nd in the Henley Passport Index 2025. As a result, Vietnamese passport holders can enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 50 out of 227 destinations. This ranking reflects the challenges faced by Vietnamese travelers when seeking to visit other countries.

Growth in International Travel

Despite these challenges, there has been a marked increase in the number of Vietnamese citizens traveling abroad. In 2024, 11 million Vietnamese traveled internationally, which represents a doubling of the figure from the previous year. This growth underscores the strong interest in international travel among Vietnamese people, even in the face of visa restrictions.

However, popular Asian destinations such as mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan still require Vietnamese travelers to apply for visas under strict procedures. These requirements can be time-consuming and complex, deterring some from making the trip altogether.

Future Travel Preferences

According to Vu Ngoc Lam, the country director at Agoda, Vietnamese travelers are increasingly looking for destinations with easier visa access in 2026. This trend highlights a clear preference for countries that offer a more straightforward and hassle-free travel experience.

As the global travel landscape continues to evolve, the need for more flexible visa policies becomes ever more apparent. With the growing demand for international travel among Vietnamese citizens, addressing these visa restrictions could play a crucial role in shaping future travel trends and boosting the tourism sector in Vietnam.
