Record Prostate Procedures Help Reduce NHS Waiting Lists

A hospital in England has made headlines by performing a record number of prostate procedures in a single day, aiming to reduce the growing waiting lists within the National Health Service (NHS). The procedure, known as Aquablation therapy, is being used to treat men suffering from an enlarged prostate, a common non-cancerous condition that affects older men.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as it is medically known, can cause significant issues with urination, leading to sleep disturbances and other complications. Many patients have to wait for months before receiving treatment, which can severely impact their quality of life.

Frimley Health Foundation Trust in Surrey recently set a new benchmark by treating 12 men with enlarged prostates in one day using Aquablation therapy. This minimally invasive surgical procedure involves a robotically controlled jet of water to remove excess prostate tissue, thereby reducing pressure on the bladder.

Eleven of the men treated on October 18 were able to return home the same day. One of them, Nigel Howlett, 68, from Farnham, had been waiting for 18 months for care. He shared his experience, stating:

“I’ve lived with this for a long time, including a significant lack of sleep and then not drinking enough liquids to try and prevent the need to urinate. It might not be one of the most crucial procedures, but it has greatly affected my quality of life. I’m hoping it will make quite a big difference to my symptoms. This day was a very good idea to help patients like me who have waited too long.”

Neil Barber, a consultant urological surgeon at the trust, explained the significance of the event. He noted that the trust usually performs a maximum of three Aquablation procedures in one half-day operating list per week. However, the increasing demand from both local and regional patients has led to longer waiting times.

“We wanted to utilise this technology to see what we could achieve to help patients waiting for treatment, and demonstrate that the efficiency of treatment of Aquablation can really impact the waiting list. The day was a huge success.”

Prevalence of Enlarged Prostate in Older Men

The condition is quite common, with a third of men over 50 experiencing symptoms, rising to between 70% and 80% of those over 75. Last year, King Charles III, 76, revealed he had been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.

Most men with symptoms do not require surgery. Lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol or fizzy drink consumption, bladder training, and eating more fiber are often recommended as initial steps. Medications like diuretics and alpha blockers can also help relax the muscles in the gland, making it easier to urinate. In some cases, urinary catheters may be necessary.

For those who do require surgery, the most common procedure is transurethral resection, where a portion of the prostate is removed.

The Daily Mail has been actively campaigning to end unnecessary prostate cancer deaths and to advocate for a national screening program. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the UK, with approximately 63,000 diagnoses and 12,000 deaths annually.

Recent advancements in medical technology, such as a futuristic NHS procedure, are showing promising results in addressing prostate cancer-related side effects. Additionally, a groundbreaking £6 million urine test is being explored as a potential solution to reduce unnecessary surgeries.

As the NHS continues to face challenges in meeting its targets for prostate cancer treatment, there is a growing concern about the impact of delays on patient outcomes. With ongoing research and innovative treatments, the hope is that these developments will lead to better care and improved quality of life for men affected by prostate conditions.
