First Commercial Flight Touches Down at Ekiti Airport

A New Era for Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport
The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport has officially opened its doors to commercial flights, marking a significant milestone for the people of Ekiti State. The inaugural flight landed in Ado-Ekiti, the capital city, yesterday, generating excitement among locals and stakeholders alike.
This development comes two years after the airport was commissioned in October 2023, an event that was celebrated with great fanfare. The then outgoing Governor Kayode Fayemi officially inaugurated the facility, with a military aircraft from the Nigerian Air Force, an ATR-42, making the first landing at the airport. This historic moment was cherished by the residents of Ekiti as a symbol of progress and opportunity.
Governor Fayemi, who had previously described the project as his parting gift for the people of Ekiti, expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the airport. He declared, “My job is done, Ekiti Kete,” just 24 hours before leaving office. However, it took over two years for the airport to transition from being a dream to a reality, with the first commercial flight finally taking off.
The United Nigeria airline (UN 0622) made history by operating the inaugural flight from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport. The aircraft arrived at 11:00 a.m., and the first return flight from Ado-Ekiti to Lagos departed at around 12:00 noon. This journey was filled with passengers, including students from Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti.
Significant Investments in the Airport
Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, highlighted the financial commitment to the airport during the ceremony. He revealed that the state has invested over N49 billion in the project so far. Additionally, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, made a direct donation of navigational aids (CVOR/DME) and control tower equipment worth $1.6 million. He also contributed to the construction of a 100-car capacity car park, which cost N356,795,039.18.
Oyebanji emphasized that the challenges faced by the state have been transformed into opportunities through the successful launch of commercial flight operations. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strong support, which enabled the state to complete the project. He also acknowledged former Governor Kayode Fayemi for his courage and determination and Afe Babalola for his financial and moral backing.
A Milestone for CCECC Nigeria Ltd
John Zhao, Executive Director of CCECC Nigeria Ltd, described the Ekiti airport as a proud milestone for both the company and Nigeria. He noted that the airport represents the transformation of previously unused land into a fully operational aviation hub. The project, which began with a concept design, is now connected to the global network, showcasing the potential of Nigeria's infrastructure development.
Attendees and Celebrations
The inaugural flight was attended by several notable figures, including former Governors Otunba Niyi Àdebayo and Dr. Kayode Fayemi, along with Mr. Ayo Fayose. Members of the National Assembly, led by Senate Leader Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB), Sen. Yemi Adaramodu, Hon. Femi Bamisile, and Hon. Akin Rotimi, were also present. Their presence underscored the significance of the event and the collective effort behind the airport's success.
